The Regatta - is the biggest event of the
year by far!
The whole town is taken over, and if you have never been to a rowing regatta
before don worry, it is a superb social occasion, and is part of the "Summer
Season" for the socialites. A glass of Pimms in the
stewards enclosure is a civilised way of enjoying the event.
The bridge across the river and the Angel pub are absolutely packed at this time, and a whole tented village springs up in the meadows along the banks of the Thames.
The
Festival
Following immediately after the Regatta is the Festival.
Music, theatre, jazz, words and comedy in four venues - the Floating Stage, the
Club and Towpath Marquees and the Crystal Palace Firework displays
A wide range of bars and restaurants.
River
and Rowing Museum
The River & Rowing Museum was designed
by David Chipperfield Architects to a brief which set out to establish an
astonishing Museum. The building is raised on columns above water meadows beside
the Thames and is built of exposed concrete and glass with a terne coated steel
roof, clad in green oak.
The Museum has won numerous awards for its architectural design and innovative galleries including The Royal Fine Arts Commision Building of the Year 1999 and National Heritage/NPI Museum of the Year 1999.
The Museum has three main galleries devoted to the River Thames, the international sport of rowing and the town of Henley. There are also three special exhibition galleries, the Riverside Café, shop, Education Centre, library and function rooms.
